Natural landforms

Natural-looking terrain usually separates three scales of work:

  1. Silhouette: begin with Mountain, Canyon, Dunes, Crater, Island, Gradient, or Shape.
  2. Variation: combine or blend low-frequency Perlin, Simplex, MultiFractal, or Voronoi fields.
  3. Surface: apply Warp, erosion, Roughen, Stratify, or Terraces after the large form reads clearly.

A reliable mountain chain is:

Mountain → Warp → Erosion → Autolevel → Build Map

Use Transform to place or rotate a source and Combine to add, multiply, maximize, or otherwise merge compatible heights. Clamp or Autolevel after arithmetic that leaves the 0–1 range.

Avoid using high-frequency detail to fix a weak silhouette. Zoom out, lower preview resolution, and make the map readable in grayscale before adding weathering or materials.
